Otherwise, please click on a question to find more information about that topic:
Who worked on this project? When was this research carried
out? Where can I find information about a
specific parish? Use the navigation buttons on the left of the page to bring you to the relative section. (If you are looking at the frameless version of the site, the navigation buttons do not appear. Instead links are provided at the top of the parish introduction page.) Alternatively, if you are looking for a particular person or feature
of a parish, click on the 'Search' button at the top right hand corner
of any page in the site (or the 'Search' tab on any of the main site pages*).
This will open the Search page. Here, you will find options to search
by parish name, church name, graveyard name, Holy Wells, or famous people.
Choose the name of the person or feature from the drop down menus provided.
Click on 'Go' to be taken directly to the parish containing that information. I have additional information for one of
the parish histories. Who should I submit this information to? Where can I find genealogical information? My family was from a particular parish.
Can I find information about them? Unfortunately, we do not have any genealogical information available.
The Diocesan Heritage Project dealt specifically with ecclesiastical history
and sites. However, Genealogical Research is available from the Limerick
Archives, The Granary, Limerick. Where can I find out which priests served
in a parish? How were the lists of priests compiled? How were the lists of townlands and derivations
compiled? Firstly, we tried to obtain a list of the townlands of each parish from the local Parish Priest or local historian. As priests are moved from parish to parish, some priests would not know all the townlands in their parish and when this was the case, we asked local historians for the information. Secondly, where we were unable to obtain a list of townlands for a parish, we turned to a local history of that parish. These are listed in the Bibliography section. We also used John O’Donovan’s 'Field Name Books of the City & County of Limerick (1839-40)' to compile the lists of townlands. Thirdly, we used Limerick Diocesan maps, which marked out the townlands of each parish. However, the dates of these maps are unknown, so it is possible that we have included townlands in some parishes that now rightfully belong to a bounding parish. In many cases, a townland may be part of two or more parishes due to the way that the parish boundaries are defined. The translation of the townlands into Irish was sourced from 'Contae
Luimnigh (1990)', which was edited by Art Ó Maolfabhail. The translation
of the townlands of the parishes of Cratloe & Parteen/Meelick were
sourced from James Frost’s 'County of Clare – Irish Local
Names Explained (1906)'. Some of the following words appear in many of the translations for townlands in each parish and to spare repetition, we include them at this point:
Please note that the translation for 'Rath' is given as 'Rath' throughout this site in accordance with the translations in 'Contae Luimnigh (1990). However, 'Rath' is more commonly translated as 'fort'. How do I navigate this site? A: Link to Diocese of Limerick Home Page
A: Link to Diocese of Limerick Home Page
This logo appears on every page in the site. You can click on it at any time to go to the Diocese of Limerick Home Page.
When you are looking at the Frames version of this site, navigation buttons appear in the left-hand panel of the screen. These buttons provide links to the various sections within a parish history, i.e., history, churches, graveyards, local sites, famous people, townlands, and parish priests. A number of the urban parishes include buttons which link to the religious orders located in those parishes.
There are forward and back arrows located on either side of the heading on every page of each parish history. Use these arrows to bring you page-by-page through the parish history. The rollovers on the back arrow on the first page, and the forward arrow on the last page are disabled indicating that there are no more pages prior to or after those pages. D: Buttons for the Main Site pages*
These buttons are located in the top right hand corner of every page in this site except for the Text-only pages and the Home Page. The Text-Only pages have text-links in place of the buttons, while the main page has a navigation bar. The buttons provide links to the Diocese of Limerick Home Page, the Heritage Project Home Page, the Index of Parishes Page, the Search Page, and this Help Page.
Occasionally there is more than one topic or page in a section. Whenever that is the case links to each topic or page appear at the top and bottom of each page in the section. For example, in the churches section of Cratloe-Sixmilebridge parish, there are links to Cratloe Church, Sixmilebridge Church and to the Church Ruins in the parish. Clicking on these links will bring you to the relevant section. (Alternatively you can use the forward and back arrows on either side of the heading to view each page in a section.) At the bottom of each page in the parish histories, there are links provided to the Heritage Project Home Page, the Introduction to the Parish History and back to the top of the page.
Each of the Main site pages, i.e., Heritage Project Home Page, Index of Parishes, Search Page, Help Page, Map Page, and Extras Page, has a set of tabs as shown above, which allow you to navigate between the pages. You will be able to tell which page you are currently viewing because the tab will be the same blue colour as the bar beneath the tabs. For example, in the screen shot above the tab for the Home Page is highlighted. Index The Index page contains a complete list of links to all of the parishes, urban and rural, in the Diocese of Limerick. It also contains links to the five religious orders in Limerick city. Click on any of these links to bring you to the Heritage Project site for that parish or religious order. Search The Search Page contains several drop-down menus, which allow you to search the site by parish name, church, graveyard, Holy Wells, or famous people. When you choose an item from the drop-down menu, click the 'Go' button to be taken to the parish containing that information. To return to the Search Page, click on the Search button in the top right hand corner of the page. What accessibility features does this site
have? Where can I make a donation towards the restoration
of St John's Cathedral?
For further information on any of the above please contact the Conservation Project Office:
You can find further information on the Conservation project at http://www.limerickdiocese.org/stjohns_restoration/index.htm According to the first page of the parish history,
I am looking at the frameless version of this site. However, when I click
on the link to bring me to the Frames version nothing happens. Why? How can I get permission to reproduce
the photographs or text on this site? I have a question but can't find the answer
here. Who do I contact with my question? Heritage Project Home
